Kaikoura, New Zealand
November 30, 2008
Apparently I can't write today. Need an edit-undo function. Apple-z for my head.
Kaikoura is BEAUTIFUL! So unreal. Snowy mountains cascading right into a sapphire sea. The smell of saltwater makes me homesick.
The main stretch through town is small, quirky shops full of backpackers and seafarers. I can't get over how blue the water is. You can see the edge of the shelf where it drops off — deep blue. The glacial runoff is a milky pale blue. The glacial runoff is a milky pale blue. Where they meet, it's this brilliant turquoise bath. The water is surprisingly warm. The beaches are either brown sand or these black river rocks, interspersed with bright, white, perfectly round stones, polished yet not shiny like river rock.
